Sore Throats in Babies: Spot the Signs and Speed Up Relief

Tips on eating, bedtime and what to watch for.

Little ones can’t always tell you their throats are sore – toddlers may even say their tummy hurts! You might notice that swallowing seems tough, or hear a scratchy sound in their voice. The good news is, you can help them shake it off fast. Scan through these steps for sore throat relief:

  • Have them nap and drink, lots. Offer little ones frequent feedings. For toddlers, popsicles are great.

  • Turn on a cool-mist humidifier in their room. Moist air can make their throat feel better. Just make sure to clean your humidifier often.

  • Call your pediatrician if:

    • The pain lasts longer than a few days

    • They’ve also got a fever or earache, or find it hard to breathe or swallow. They could have an infection (like strep throat) that needs treatment.

Since sore-throat-causing germs are easily passed on, remember to have everyone at home wash their hands often, and avoid sharing cups, utensils or towels.
