Knee Arthritis: 3 Ways to Help Your Joints De-Stress

What you can do to help reduce knee strain while you exercise.

Your knee is the biggest joint in your body. So when arthritis causes the cartilage that cushions it to break down, you feel it. But you don't have to put up with joint pain. Your first move – treat it early to keep it from slowing you down. Then, when heading out to exercise:

  • Think low-impact.* Biking and swimming are great because they help you tone up without stressing your knees. And losing even a few pounds means there's less strain on your joints.

  • Look for energy-absorbing shoes, or pick up a knee brace. They'll lessen the impact on your knees and help you keep going.

  • Remember to warm up and stretch first! Start with a quick walk, then stretch the muscles in front and back of your thigh – it's extra-important for you. The walk warms up your joints, giving you a better stretch. And stretching means less tension on your tendons (muscle-bone connectors) and less pressure on your knees.

*Make sure to check with your doctor before starting or changing a workout plan.
